Menstrual Health

Every month, millions of us reach for menstrual products without a second thought, but did you know that most traditional tampons and pads are packed with hidden plastic? From plastic tampon applicators to synthetic materials woven right in, these everyday essentials are quietly fueling plastic pollution.

Hemptress Hygienics Store

So it’s not just the packaging—those sneaky bits of period plastic end up in our oceans and vital eco systems, especially when users wrongly dispose of them. The result? Ocean plastic pollution that threatens marine life and even creeps into our food chain as micro-plastics.

Make A Difference

Did you know that globally, feminine hygiene products are contributing big time to pollution? The average woman will generate a significant amount of waste over her lifetime from disposable tampons, pads, and panty liners which add to the growing problem. Which makes plastic free period products a complete no brainer.

Organyc. 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton, eco friendly tampons

Actually, original “traditional” used to be reusable cloth pads, and before that, moss, or some other absorbent plant material. Yep, good old moss, ladies, we’ve all heard the stories. Before cloth became cheap, somewhere in the mid 1800s, you can bet menstrual rags were washed and used many times. Likely these reusable pads were passed down for generations before finally wearing out. Cloth was just too costly, back in the day.

Sometimes...Just Bleed Freely Girls!

Sometimes it's good to just let it flow freely—literally! Some cultures, back in the day, had women sequestered together all in one place during their monthly. The Menstrual Hut, if you will. Got to wonder if that wasn't an invention of the women themselves. Some place to go, just bleed, and not be bothered. Do ya think?

FAQs

Aren't all tampons and pads biodegradable?

The truth is no. Conventional, regular tampons rely heavily on plastic. Harmful chemicals involved both in production and decomposition. Beached cotton, rayon and wood pulp, plus plastic, leach chlorines, glycophates, dioxins and other toxins into the environment, as well as our bodies.

Do feminine hygiene products really amount to that much non biodegradable waste?

In the United States alone, women roughly menstruate 2280 days in her lifetime, which amounts to approximately 11000 pads or tampons, in just within a 6 year estimate by one study. The use of conventional feminine hygiene not only impacts the environment, but dioxins and glycophates, in particular, have been linked to cancer and reproductive issues.

What is TSS?

Toxic Shock Syndrome is a condition that spiked in the 1980s and resulted in ultra high absorbancy tampons being pulled from the market. The length of use of a single tampon allowed the bacteria responsible for TSS to accumulate in dangerous, sometimes fatal levels. Our bodies are designed to naturally flush this bacteria. So bleed freely, girls!...whenever possible.
